Lion’s Gate Hospital HOpe Centre
North Vancouver, British Columbia
Rotary White Maple custom stained doors
The Lion’ s Gate Hospital’ s new HOpe Centre provides a completely fresh shift on treatment for the mentally ill. And it does it in style. The 150,000-square-foot, four-story building integrates inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care alongside a new Djavad Mowafaghian UBC Medical Education Centre to both promote learning and care in the same location.
Part of the shift that came with replacing a 26-bed inpatient psychiatric unit originally built in 1929 came with IBI Group providing a modern West Coast architectural design that makes an aesthetic statement while playing a larger role in care. The HOpe Centre evolves mental health facilities from dull and depressing, stuck in sterilized casings into something warm, inviting, fresh and architecturally striking, all while providing efficient uses. The building was designed to allow for separation of applications in the differing client and patient populations, using in-patient floors with shared living spaces, lounges, exercise rooms, private rooms and a large roof garden that can promote social interaction.
The LEED Gold building features an entirely energy-efficient building envelope, high performance glazing, heat recovery chiller, active chilled beam system and displacement ventilation. To match both the environmental, aesthetic and practical needs of such a forward-thinking view on mental health treatment, Lynden Door was brought into the process to provide rotary white maple custom-stained doors for the project.
The use of white maple meshes ideally with the West Coast design that encourages an interaction with the natural environment while creating welcoming gathering spaces within the center. Using the custom staining process available through Lynden Door, the HOpe Centre achieved the exact look needed to meet the exacting architectural directives.
Opened in fall 2014, the center now has a completely freshened 26-bed psychiatric inpatient unit that features the variety of extras designed to assist patients and clients. By combining the educational needs of UBC students, the new space attracts talent to Vancouver’ s North Shore, offering them a pristine clinical environment, both in the level and style of care and in a package—the HOpe Centre—that ties it all together.
Veneers look rich and lustrous with a Lynden Door factory applied transparent urethane finish. A great choice, as it adds durability and seals the door, all six sides. Clear coated doors lend a unique European flair to painted jambs and casings – an eclectic look that works in equally well traditional or modernist decor.
