The Hyatt at Olive 8 hotel offers an architecturally striking addition to the downtown Seattle skyline. But this 39-story tower is far more than a picture of well-built construction as one of the first LEED-certified hotels in the nation.

As an early adopter of the country’s new wave of environmentally conscious hospitality options, the 17 floors that make up the Hyatt at Olive 8 went both luxury and sustainable with a hotel featuring everything from guest rooms, 11,000 square feet of “green meeting space,” a restaurant offering locally sourced ingredients and an all-natural spa. Inside the meeting space you’ll find a 7,000 square foot ballroom with additional day-lit meeting spaces with 15-foot floor-to-ceiling windows to reduce the need for artificial light.

Creating sustainable luxury takes forethought on every level, which is why the Hyatt at Olive 8 chose Lynden Door’s durable prefinished hardboard interior doors, a natural selection available in a variety of wood species and finishes. Having the natural durability of prefinished hardboard—the door’s core is bonded and sanded for stability against warping—was just the start for the Hyatt at Olive 8’s needs.

Co-designed by MulvannyG2 and New York architect Richard Gluckman, the building has the city’s largest living rooftop, a fritted glass exterior with blue glass fin elements to build added dimension and a 100-percent glass exterior to merge both sustainability and design in the downtown core’s northeast corner near the Washington State Convention Center and within walking distance of Pike Place Market and the Seattle waterfront.

Inside, the luxury and sustainability don’t slow. High-tech features fill the rooms, aiming to conserve electricity and water—the building uses 32 percent less water, 20 percent less power and creates less storm water runoff than other similar-sized buildings in its class. But that desire for luxury never strays far from the design mantra, from exterior glass right through to interior doors.
